'La Scala' is listed as a place of cultural heritage significance with both Queensland Heritage and AHC. It was built in 1914 for Scottish doctor THR Mathewson and is an example of the work of architect TR Hall. It is significant as it demonstrates innovative architectural ideas including a large roof deck for outdoor living, the free platforms linked via the stairwell bay, and the stylistic innovation in the use of decorative elements and materials. Further items of note include the unusual scale and form of the building and retaining walls and the contribution these elements make to its Brunswick Street streetscape. Also significant is the aesthetic quality of decorative elements including plaster ceilings, batten detailing, leadlight panels and timber work.
